Imsuk HA (Class of 2015)
writer: HILS   |   date: 2024.08.07   |   count: 205

Imsuk HA (Class of 2015), Human Rights Officer of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Seoul

I have over seven years of experience in human rights, peacebuilding, transitional justice, and accountability. I currently work as a Human Rights Officer at the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in Seoul. Prior to that, I worked four years as a peacebuilding and conflict prevention specialist at the UN Human Rights West Africa Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal. I earned an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 2017 after graduating from HILS (Class of 2015).

My journey in human rights began at HILS, where I developed a strong foundation in character alongside legal knowledge. Professors with expertise in international human rights law encouraged me to pursue a career in the field, which led to my internships at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, the UN Human Rights office in Geneva, and Human Rights Watch. But above all, interactions with HILS faculty in a faith-based community influenced my personal and professional values. The verse “Do justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with your god (Micah 6:8)” has always been at the forefront of my professional life.

As my undergraduate major was unrelated to law, I had concerns about handling the challenging legal studies in English during law school, but with the unwavering support of the HILS community, I was able to navigate through the three years and graduate. HILS is a place where we all grow together by preparing each other, and this is an essential skill that is highly valued in the workplace. I would like to express my gratitude to the HILS faculty and classmates for their invaluable support and encouragement.
